On December 5, in collaboration with the National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” (NUOMA) and The Nautical Institute Ukraine Branch, a Ship Handling Webinar was conducted to provide cadets with insights into modern maritime training methodologies. The focus of this event was the use of web-based simulator technology as an accessible and effective tool for developing ship handling skills in confined waters.
Web-based simulators offer several advantages, including flexibility in training locations, cost-effectiveness, and unlimited access for users. Unlike full-mission simulators that require physical presence, web-based platforms allow cadets to practice maneuvers remotely, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and hands-on application. This approach enhances learning outcomes by enabling self-paced practice and reinforcing key ship handling principles.
Participants engaged in realistic exercises designed to improve their understanding of navigational challenges. Ksenia, one of the participants, shared her thoughts: “This was an excellent opportunity to deepen our understanding of critical ship handling in confined waters. Practicing on the online simulator made the concepts easier to grasp and apply.” Vladislav also commented on the experience: “As a future navigator, this was an invaluable experience. The realistic simulator provided hands-on practice in maneuvering and berthing operations. I’m looking forward to seeing the simulator expand its capabilities.”
One of the cadets, Dmitry, reflected on the experience: “The simulator’s intuitive interface improved my understanding of ship handling and safety. These skills will undoubtedly enhance my professional capabilities.” Such feedback highlights the effectiveness of digital simulation in preparing cadets for real-world maritime scenarios.
As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the integration of web-based simulation into training programs ensures broader accessibility while maintaining high educational standards. This technology supports the development of essential skills through interactive and repetitive practice, contributing to the competence and confidence of future maritime professionals.
