First special conference “Maritime Arbitration” was held in Odessa on September 28, 2018, and gathered leading experts in transport industry. The members of the NI Ukrainian branch took an active part in the Conference.
The conference was organized by Interlegal, Maritime Arbitration Commission at the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA).
Nikolay Selivon, President of MAC at the UCCI, Clive Aston, ex-President of LMAA, Andrey Kostin, Vice-Chairman of the Odessa Region Bar Council and MAC arbitrator, and Galina Dibrova, Chairman of the Committee of the Council of Judges of Ukraine and judge of the Odessa Commercial Court of Appeal, had a welcome speech.
The forum gathered nearly 100 lawyers and attorneys, experts in special maritime arbitration, scientists, representatives of stevedoring and shipping companies, shipbuilding yards, maritime agencies and commercial companies from Ukraine, the UK, Georgia and Turkey.
At the conference, native businessmen discussed specifications and expectations of special maritime arbitration institutions, jointly with new prospects for maritime arbitration.
In particular, Oleg Podtserkovny, ICAC arbitrator and member of the ICAC Presidium, presented novelties in the Ukrainian legislation on arbitration. Olga Kostyshyna, Councilor of the President of ICAC and MAC at the UCCI, highlighted new options of maritime dispute settlement for maritime business due to new MAC Rules. First session touched also MAC and ICAC case studies. Interlegal partner and MAC arbitrator Nikolay Melnykov, MNI highlighted arbitration clauses set forth in maritime agency, ship repair and ship management agreements.
Second session touched practice of applying new LMAA Terms. Daniella Horton, LMAA Honorary Secretary, Clive Aston, ex-President of LMAA, and arbitrators George Lambrou, David Martin-Clark and James Clanchy discussed the issues of drafting lawsuits and case proceedings at the London maritime arbitration.
In the end, Interlegal partner Natalya Myroshnychenko, told about attorney’s role in Black Sea Region maritime arbitration.
