Dr Phil Anderson, director of risk management at North of England P&I Association, has decided to relinquish his position at the 50 million GT, A- rated club to devote more time to his two-year role as president of the Nautical Institute and to pursue his interests in the ISM Code – on which he is now internationally recognised a leading expert.
Anderson has set up a consultancy called ConsultISM Ltd– which was officially launched in mid-January 2005 – to advise the shipping industry and its legal advisers and insurers on interpreting the ISM Code and analysing and improving safety management systems. However, he will continue to work as a consultant to the North of England, which has retained exclusive call upon his services in the field of P&I loss prevention. A number of projects are planned for 2005.
Anderson joined the club in 1987 after seven years with the Sunderland club and 11 years at sea with Bibby Line. He established North of England’s loss-prevention department in 1991 and has pioneered loss-prevention and risk-management initiatives in the shipping industry ever since.
According to joint managing director Peter Crichton, ‘Phil Anderson’s contribution to North of England’s success over the past 17 years has been immense, both on a technical level and through the warmth of his personality and humour’.
Tony Baker succeeds Anderson as manager of the club’s risk-management department on 1 January 2005. He joined North of England in 1999 having spent 18 years at sea on cargo and container ships before becoming a senior lecturer at South Tyneside College – one of the world’s leading maritime training organisations. He is a master mariner and has an MBA in international business.
Baker has developed many of the club’s loss-prevention initiatives over the past five years and takes a particular interest in navigational safety and cargo stowage. ‘I will continue to take risk-management activities forward into new areas and ensure our members remain provided with an unrivalled range of effective risk-management tools, training and advice,’ he says.
