The World Maritime Day theme for the year is “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”.
This provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and to highlight the important – yet under-utilized – contribution of women within the maritime sector.

This year National University «Odessa Maritime Academy» marks its 75th anniversary on June 7, 2019. Odessa Maritime Academy is well-known for a long time in the international marine shipping.

On the middle of February 2019, the Second National Forum of Crewing Companies of Ukraine took place. The Forum was organized under close cooperation with the Nautical Institute of Ukraine and Chamber of Shipping of Ukraine. The general point of agenda was training and education of Ukrainian seafarers, their certification and prospects of employment.

The newly elected President of The Nautical Institute, Captain Nick Nash FNI FRIN FRGS has pledged to help in its efforts to improve standards of shiphandling and bridge resource management (BRM).

This year AGM and Technical Seminar was hosted by Malta Branch. It is quite difficult
to find more beautiful place for such event. The only disadvantage – during every coffee
break delegates and participants had to fight strong wish to go down and jump into the
sea.

The challenges surrounding the delivery of safe and efficient marine operations throughout the offshore energy and maritime industries was the focus for a major conference which was held at the Aberdeen Beach Ballroom.

In the friendly and inclusive environment, the captains of Odessa were sharing their memories about the past, were speaking about the present, and were planning the future.

In May 2019, a meeting took place between Professor Volodymyr Torskiy, FNI Honorary Secretary of the Nautical Institute of Ukraine, and Messrs Joseph Escott, Senior Business Consultant at DV55 Ltd, and Captain Dmytro Rudenko, MNI Senior Advisor at the International Association of Risk Management Practitioners.

The Nautical Institute is collaborating with KVH Videotel, a world leader in the provision of e-learning for the maritime industry, to give its members access to a set of online training courses free of charge.

Interlegal Shipping Talks, first meeting for experts in the Ukrainian shipping, was held at Interlegal office. This event, held with the assistance of the Nautical Institute of Ukraine, awoke interest among professionals, scientists and even students.

HELMEPA, the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association is this year celebrating 25 years of operation.

Every Year the International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates World Maritime Day. The exact date is left to individual governments but is usually celebrated during the last week in September. The day is used to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment and to emphasize a particular aspect of IMO’s work.
